Susan is an award-winning strategist with 35+ years of experience in marketing, communications, brand, digital, advancement, team leadership and organizational development. She is known for creative and cohesive approaches to the challenges within higher education, nonprofits and business.
Susan’s marketing consulting practice is focused on colleges, universities and independent schools, and she is a fierce advocate for her clients. Because she’s been there, her approach is grounded in their reality and leads to solutions with vision and action.
Susan’s career coaching practice is focused on listening, analysis and collaboration — all with an intense commitment to help support her clients’ career goals. A sixteen-year veteran of human resource work, her jobs in nonprofit, corporate, healthcare, state and federal government, university, agency and work-from-home settings make her a bit of a Swiss Army knife. She’s seen it all!
Susan’s most recent university role was as director of corporate and foundation relations at William & Mary. As a major gift officer, she developed fundraising strategies and grant proposals, collaborating with senior administrators and faculty to match university and academic priorities with the most appropriate prospective donors.
Previously Susan was vice president at mStoner, a Chicago-based higher education marketing agency. She led the consulting practice and directed a team of 19 professionals in strategy, creative, technology and project management. Her role included overseeing client satisfaction and the delivery of high-quality work, and directing a multi-million dollar, fixed-bid project portfolio.
As an elementary school student, Susan won first place in a national writing contest with a 100-word maximum. Even then, she was preparing to write for the web.
During an earlier, 22-year stint at William & Mary, Susan served on the president’s strategic communications team, providing leadership for the creative vision, scope, and requirements for marketing and brand management at the university. As the director of creative services, she led a diverse team of 13 professional designers, project managers, photographers, videographers, communications consultants and web developers. Susan’s other roles at William & Mary included director of web and communication services in IT, and compensation analyst in HR.
Susan is a magna cum laude graduate of James Madison University and holds a B.A. in Spanish Languages and Literatures. She has completed graduate coursework at William & Mary.
